Pao de Açúcar Is Where Panoramic Views Of Rio de Janeiro Can Be Enjoyed
Rio de Janeiro is a city of extremes from the shanty towns (Favelas) sprawling up the mountain side to the luxury apartments along the beach of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and even Barra de Tijuca. Although the city has been making great efforts to improve upon the safety, there should be no concerns in regards to spending your vacation in Rio de Janeiro. While petty crime such as a stolen camera or wallet may occur in the tourist areas, the serious crimes tend to occur more inland away from the beach areas where all the tourist activity is located.
The most famous event in Brazil is Carnival which goes on for 5 days starting midnight on the Friday before Ash Wednesday and continuing on through that Wednesday. Although super crowded and more expensive than other periods, visitors can see extravagant costumes, extraordinary and extremely colorful parades, dancing in the streets with live bands and entertainment almost everywhere you go. If your plans are to visit Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, make sure you plan months in advance and book your hotel or apartment because everything will be completely sold out.
There are many things to do and sites to see in Rio. Pao de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) is a spot where panoramic views of Rio and beyond can be enjoyed. The most striking feature is the green peak which protrudes out over the city with fantastic 360 degree views of Rio de Janeiro. Try to get there prior to Sunset for an amazing twilight view of the city and shortly later a breathtaking evening view of Copacabana.
Another great area to visit is the Jardim Botanico (Botanical Gardens) which is located near the Lagoa (Lagoon). The gardens were first planted in the early 19th century by Prince Regent Dom Joao and have since developed into some of the most beautiful floral and plant gardens in all of Brazil. There are literally thousands of plants and flowers to see as you make your way through the walking paths of the gardens as well as several small waterfalls. The best time to visit Jardim Botanico is during the week so that you can avoid the weekend crowds.
Parque do Flamengo is a popular park with locals as well as families and couples. The Parque do Flamengo can be found close to Guanabara Bay and is a great place to partake in sporting activities as well as leisure pursuits. There are cycle paths, walking trails, ball courts and playgrounds. The Parque is a nice change of pace from the beach theme activities as well as a good opportunity to see how the locals like to enjoy their free time.
